John Wollwerth

The Power Of A Lens
What an incredible challenge to describe a man whose work says so much without a single word. John Wollwerth found a love for photography through a hobby of his father, who was an amateur photographer that loved his old Exacta camera from East Germany. When his father passed, John inherited that old Exacta and began exploring the world through his very first lens. Seeing his work, he was encouraged by friends and family to pursue this talent and turn it into a full-time profession.
“In 2005,” John explains, “I came to a crossroads. I either needed to start over in business doing my previous job, or I could start my own business doing photography.” Faced with two options, both resulting in starting over in life, he decided to follow his true passion for photography. John then shared some wisdom he himself had found along his journey saying, “life is too short to do things you hate just because it’s secure. If you have a passion for something, and you’re good at it, find a way to make that what you do. Put a plan together and start setting goals.”
John is an award-winning photographer, and his work has appeared in numerous publications like The New York Times, The Washington Post, Inside Weddings, Garden and Gun, South Carolina Homes and Gardens, and many more.
He has traveled the world to fifteen different countries on four continents, from Ethiopia to underwater sessions in the Caribbean Sea and back again to his home in Beaufort. His work not only captures a scene, or the people in it, but also brings each one of us along on his explorations into the four corners of the world. We are invited into different countries, different walks of life, celebratory moments, moments of anguish and those of joy, all connecting us as a human race and all through the power of a lens. John doesn’t simply focus on beautiful opportunities, but rather has a keen eye for capturing humanity at its core.
John also has a passion for missionary work in Africa where his photography and videography tell a story that often stirs emotion and brings people into action. “There’s the satisfaction of capturing something compelling or something beautiful or heart wrenching. But there’s also the satisfaction of knowing that I’m able to make a difference with the work I do,” explains John.
In addition to his global photography, John is available for family portrait sessions and is a well-known wedding photographer. Whether you are tying the knot right here at home in the Lowcountry or plan to have a destination wedding, John is ready to capture those precious moments and lock them in a breathtaking time capsule of print form. It is an incredible talent to not only capture the moments themselves, but also the emotions, joy and love connected to those moments all through a photograph, yet John masters it all and seemingly effortlessly.
John loves serving Beaufort county saying the area, “has the right combination of almost everything. The people are very warm here and I truly like working with them.” He continues, “there’s no shortage of scenery and fantastic places to shoot a family portrait or a wedding.”
John also works with Beaufort Lifestyle. “John is an amazing photographer! He has been with me since the beginning of Beaufort Lifestyle, nine years ago! His work is impeccable.  I am blessed to have him on my team,” raves Beaufort Lifestyle’s owner, Julie Hales.
