Owen K. Hand, a Certified Financial PlannerTM and partner in the firm Hand & Tanner Financial Group Inc., grew up in the Lowcountry and has lived in the same house on Saint Helena Island since he was three years old. He and his wife Patsy, a Beaufort native, married in 1968 and have a son, Ken, a daughter, Leslie, and two grandsons.
Owen attended the University of South Carolina Beaufort, then transferred to the main campus in Columbia where he completed his degree in Business Administration. After college, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and began his business career in insurance with John Hancock in 1967. He left John Hancock in 1976 to enter the field of financial planning. “I didn’t want to be restricted to representing just one company when serving the financial planning needs of my clients,” he explains. In 1989, Owen and Ronny Tanner formed Hand & Tanner Financial Group Inc., which is affiliated with an independent broker dealer and registered investment advisor.
Owen specializes in assessing the financial situation of retirees, to help them determine if they will have adequate funds to last their lifetime. However, he emphasizes the importance of financial planning for everyone, regardless of financial situation or stage of life. He says everyone should answer the following questions about their finances:
• Will I have the funds I need when I retire?
• Am I paying more taxes than I need to be paying?
• If something happens to me, is my family protected?
• Will my investments help me achieve my financial goals?
• Is my business giving me all of the financial recourses it can?
• Am I managing my assets and liabilities to my best benefit?
Owen has the knowledge and experience to help you determine where you want to be financially and how to get there in the future. “I work closely with each individual to create a personalized plan with workable financial strategies to help accomplish objectives,” he says. His professional team is comprised of: Allen Freeman, CFP®; Jon Haden, who is now in the securities and advisory licensing process; Kathy Hodges, executive assistant; and Yvonne Slingluff, administrative assistant. Owen and his team offer a wide range of services to help meet the financial goals of clients, including:
• Retirement Income Planning
• Tax Planning
• Investment Analysis and Planning
• Risk Management
• Estate Planning
• Business and Business Owners Services
• Retirement Plans and Employee Benefits
“Financial planning is an ongoing process,” stresses Owen. During the first year of working with a client, he meets with the client at least quarterly to review the financial plan. After that, he meets with each client annually to discuss any changes in financial, health or personal situation that may impact the financial plan, and makes suggestions for adjustments to the plan in response to those changes. “I offer a complimentary consultation for new clients,” Owen says. “I can work with clients in either an advisory (fee-based) or a non-advisory (commission-based) capacity, depending on the client’s needs and preferences. And I always discuss applicable fees and commissions so that clients understand the costs of my services before they sign an agreement with me.” “I love what I do,” says Owen. “I’m passionate about helping people to become financially secure so they can pursue the things they want to do in life!”
Owen’s passion for his profession is evident with his success. He has had the opportunity to serve multi-generation clients, helping grandparents, to parents, and on to their children. He feels very fortunate to be in a business which has enabled him to assist many local Beaufort families in their financial needs. He says, “It’s always a great feeling to know that you have been able to help someone.”
