In August, the Conroy Center will host two free author events in partnership with independent booksellers NeverMore Books and the Beaufort Bookstore.
August 23, 5:00 p.m., at NeverMore Books
Suzanne Kamata, author of The Baseball Widow
Visiting from her home in Japan, novelist Suzanne Kamata is the author of books for adults and young adults, including most recently The Baseball Widow, which was selected as an official pick of the International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club, winner of an Independent Book Publisher Award, a Shelf Unbound 2021 Top Notable Book, and a shortlisted finalist for the 2021 CIBA Somerset Book Awards. Suzanne will speak about The Baseball Widow at NeverBooks (910 Port Republic Street), on Tuesday, August 23, at 5:00 p.m. Books will be available for sale and signing. Call the bookstore at 843-812-9460 to reserve your seat for this free event.
“Kamata deftly offers both an insider’s and an outsider’s view of Japan. Through a diverse group of characters brought together by Japan’s passion for baseball, she explores identity, the loss of idealism, and the ragged beauties to be found in that loss.”—Annabel Lyon, author of Consent
“Kamata’s authentic glimpse into Japanese life is appealing and her prose deftly exposes her characters’ flaws while evoking empathy. The Baseball Widow is a moving read of great emotional depth.”—The Japan Times
August 30, 5:00 p.m., at the Beaufort Bookstore
Therese Anne Fowler, author of It All Comes Down to This
Therese Anne Fowler is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of several novels, including A Good Neighborhood and A Well-Behaved Woman, both finalists for the Southern Book Prize for fiction. Her novel Z was adapted as a television series starring Christina Ricci as Zelda Fitzgerald. On Tuesday, August 30, at 5:00 p.m., Therese will appear at Beaufort Bookstore (2127 Boundary Street, Suite 15) in conversation with Conroy Center executive director Jonathan Haupt about her newest novel, It All Comes Down to This. Books will be available for sale and signing. Call the bookstore at 843-525-1066 to reserve your seat for this free event.
