Camp Conroy’s Little Lowcountry Library

Added to the Spanish Moss Trail

You can take a book to read or leave a book for others to enjoy at a new literary addition to Beaufort’s popular Spanish Moss Trail. The nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center’s Little Lowcountry Library can be found at the Depot Road Trailhead (2751 Depot Road, Beaufort). A project of the Conroy Center’s annual summer camp, Camp Conroy, the new little lending library was built by Ed Kulisek and painted by Aki Kato. Additional—and very creative—decorations were added by Beaufort High School seniors Millie Bennett and Lee Lemstrom and Bridges Preparatory School juniors Alexandra Bosley and Bailey Bates, all of whom are Camp Conroy counselors.

The Conroy Center is grateful to Spanish Moss Trail founder and executive director Dean Moss and to the Trail’s public awareness and development specialist Sissy Perryman for this new community partnership.

The Camp Conroy Little Lowcountry Library has already been restocked several times in its first month of usage, including with children’s books donated in memory of the late Maura Connelly by her family. Most recently, the camp counselors donated a copy of Destinesia: An Anthology of Change, written and illustrated by this summer’s Camp Conroy students and counselors. Sally Sue Lavigne, owner of Bluffton’s Storybook Shoppe children’s bookstore, has also contributed children’s books to the library.
