Water Festival Logo
In 1981 Marsha Fox designed the current wheel Water Festival logo. She recalls, “After all these years I have a very clear recollection of how all those logos came about. I remember it being a total of 23 of them and they had to be done in a hurry. I don’t know of another time when I was so under the gun. Jim Williamson called me at the same time every afternoon to see how they were coming along and I would get a sharp pain in my stomach when the phone rang at that same time every day! I kept telling him he didn’t need to call everyday and he would say he just didn’t want me to forget to do them…as if I could have!”
Below is an article that originally ran in The Beaufort Gazette back in 1981 announcing the new logo, along with a few rules for the Water Festival that year.
New, crisp design
Logo serves as promotion
The Water Festival has a new logo!
“Logo” is the word used to describe an art design with printed information that is recognized on eyesight and is used consistently to promote the event it represents.
Marsha Fox, a Beaufort resident artist, designed the logo which features a ship’s wheel with the words “Water Festival” at the top and “Beaufort, S.C.” across the bottom.
The anchor insert can be removed and replaced with other festival motifs. You will see a lot of the new logo this year and many years to come.
It’s crisp design can be spotted easily and quickly.
Ms. Fox also designed the chosen motif for this year’s official Water Festival t-shirt. Each year, artist are invited to submit a design to be emblazoned on t-shirts for the current year’s festival. The t-shirts are different each year and are sold only by the Water Festival Festival Committee.
The t-shirts for the 1981 Water Festival feature palm trees and water setting. Ms. Fox said she designed the shirts with the lowcountry in mind and visualized Beaufort sunsets, sunrises and moonlight when she selected her colors in the shirts.
She also designed the official Children’s Day silkscreen design for this year. During Children’s Day, participants are asked to bring t-shirts from home and silkscreen them for free. This year’s motif is a clown’s face which matches the clown. Ms. Fox has printed on the official Festival t-shirt for children.
Marsha is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmand, Vir. She also studied environmental design, painting and sculpture at UCLA.
