       Hearing is critical to the development of speech, language and communication;
       however, when hearing impairment goes undetected it can lead to permanent
       learning disabilities, as well as severely delayed speech.

           At around 16 weeks gestational age, a baby can hear their mother’s voice. At birth, each
      and every sound is meaningful to a child and their curiosity to these sounds help to develop
      communication abilities and allow them to become more familiar with their surroundings.
      Because this occurs so early in life, it is of the utmost importance that hearing loss is ruled out as
      soon as the child is born. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA),
      approximately 48 million individuals in the United States su er from hearing loss. Of this number, close
      to three million are under the age of three. Some early warning signs of possible hearing impairment
      include speech delay, poor academic performance, recurrent ear infections, an increase of television
      volume, and failure to respond to conversational speech at normal listening levels. Early identi cation
      of hearing loss will enable e ective intervention and treatment of symptoms so that your child may
      develop speech, language and cognitive development at a rate similar to their peers.
                                                                                                       Dr. Bridge
           During the audiological evaluation, we assess the outer ear, ear canal, and eardrum. Additionally, we
      rule out the possibility of middle ear uid and other middle ear diseases that can impede hearing
      abilities. Otoacoustic emission testing is performed on every child during a routine hearing examination We Can Improve

      testing will also be performed to determine the lowest intensity level (threshold) at which a child can
      detect speech and pure tones at di erent frequencies.
